SECOND SEMESTER PREVIEW
The Spiders are looking forward to an action-packed 2nd semester!

01.16.2008 //
The roster will have some changes as some freshmen will no longer be on the team and study abroad students will return. The team looks forward to the return to the ice of Junior forwards Chris Nelson and Mike Fredrickson.

The 2nd semester schedule starts with a game vs. cross-town rival VCU. The Spiders want to complete the 2 game sweep this season. Next will be the 5th Annual Rumble in Richmond. ACHA South #1 seed UCF will attend for the 3rd year in a row. UCF beat UR in 2006, UR beat UCF in 2007, and the 2008 game should be a great battle. Gettysburg, who beat CNU this year and CCHC member Loyola are the other 2 teams in the tournament. These should be 6 great games.

Having qualified for the ACHA DIII National Tournament twice in their history (2004, 2005), the team is unhappy with their recent absence from the tournament. Every team holds its destiny in their hands with the new ACHA “Regional Tournament” Format. The Spiders have been ranked in the top 10 in the Southern Region all season and expect to stay there after the final February ranking (includes games from the 1st weekend in February). Teams #1 and #2 get an automatic bid to the National Tournament (Rochester, Minn) and teams #3 through #10 will play in the Regional Tournament to determine South seed #3 and #4 for the Nationals. All 4 spots are up for grabs!

Regionals, CCHC Playoffs, Nationals??? – should be exciting Spiders hockey!

Please contact team General Manager Tom Occhino with any questions.

FIRST SEMESTER SUMMARY

01.15.2008 //
The biggest question coming into the 07-08 season was - can the Spiders replace the production and leadership from the recent Senior graduates? Coach Occhino was able to add a total of 13 freshmen (F,D,G) to the roster which would allow great flexibility. The freshmen were ready to contribute.

The Spiders opened the season with a win over Salisbury University in front of numerous Spider Hockey Alumni who were in town for the 3rd Annual Hockey Alumni weekend. Other early season wins included a tight victory over George Washington University during Parent's Weekend (the 1st game in CCHC history) and a road victory over D2 Georgetown University (last year's ACCHL champions).

There were some bumps in the road as the Spiders lost 1 goal games to PSU-Delco and old BRHC rivals ODU and CNU.

The highlight of the semester was the UNC Tournament as the Spiders went 3-0 to win it all! This was the 1st non-BRHC tournament championship in the Spiders' seven year history.
Other highlights and milestones included:
  • 2 victories over South Region top 10 team USF
  • 2 shutout victories (Cam Purves vs. Georgia Tech and Kevin Walsh vs. VMI)
  • 3-0 record vs. ACHA DII opponents (UNC, UVA, Georgetown)
  • Many Hat Tricks (Mike Sumbs, Mike Collins, Dan Hebert)
  • Sat 11/10/07 vs. UVA - Senior Captain Mike Sumbs extended his career assist record by getting his 100th. Freshman Sam Beaver scored the goal.

  • Sunday 11/11/07 vs. VMI - Coach Occhino earned his 100th Career win!

  • First Semester Summary

The semester ended with a record of 14 wins and 5 losses. Time was left at the end of the semester for the players to hit the books hard for exams. Everyone is excited for the 2nd semester. The roster will change and improvements will need to be made. The semester will be filled with big-time games!
