Spiders Down Cardinals, Fall to Wolfpack to Conclude Semester

12/4/11

This past weekend, the Spiders concluded their semester with two big games, hoping to notch a few huge wins under their belt going into the semester break.  The Spiders did not quite achieve their goals, going 1-1 on the weekend, earning a big win against Catholic University, while dropping a close game to North Carolina State.

On Friday night, the Spiders travelled up to Washington, DC to take on BRHC-Colonial rival Catholic University.  Despite being unranked, Richmond knew they would be up for a tough game against Catholic, as the Cardinals possess stud forward Bryan Abraham (the first overall pick in the 2011-2012 BRHC Fantasy Draft).  Robin the boy wonder Poirier got things started off right in the first period for Richmond, popping an unassisted shorthanded goal midway through the first period to put the Spiders up 1-0.  A few minutes later, Catholic was able to answer to tie the game at one.  Roberto Poirier would answer back with a little under two minutes left in the period, giving the Spiders a 2-1 lead on an assist from Ben Weisburger.

In the second period, the Spiders kept the ball rolling, as Sophomore forward Ben Weisburger popped in a goal on the power-play on assists from Brenden Gallinek and Connor Koorbusch to put the Spiders up 3-1.  Robbie Poirier would complete the hat trick with a few minutes left in the second period on assists from Brenden Gallinek and Ben Weisburger to give Richmond a 4-1 advantage.

Early on in the third, Richmond gained a 5-1 lead as Senior forward Ryan Harrity bagged a goal on assists from Little Bob Poirier and Ben Weisburger.  A few minutes later, Abraham and Co began to lead a comeback, bagging two quick goals to make the score 5-3.  Junior forward Matt Burns rung the bell to weather the storm a few minutes later on assists from Taylor Nyhoff and Kyle Peterson to make it 6-3.  Catholic quickly answered a few minutes later on a goal by the one and only Bryan Abraham to make it 6-4.  The Cardinals would add another goal less than a minute later to make it 6-5, putting the pressure on the Spiders.  Senior Ryan Harrity would stop the bleeding for good, pumping in his second goal of the game on the power-play on assists from Ben Weisburger and Connor Koorbusch.  The Spiders would finish the game, earning a 7-5 victory.

On Saturday night, The Spiders returned home to the comfy confines of the Richmond Ice Zone to close out their semester with a game against D2 North Carolina State.  Everyone knew hearts would be heavy on the evening, as it would be the final game for red-shirt senior Rob Blosio, who will be graduating at the conclusion of this semester.  The Spiders came out like zombies in the first period, as NC State was able to race out to a 6-0 lead.  However, Richmond would get their act together later in the period, as Bobby Poirier answered with a goal to make it 6-1 on assists from Ben Weisburger and Connor Koorbusch.  Poirier would add another goal just a few minutes later to make it 6-2, also on assists from Weisburger and Koorbusch.  The late goals would allow the Spiders to gain some momentum as they would head into the locker room facing a 6-2 deficit.

In the second period, Richmond continued to trim the deficit, as Robbie Poirier would complete the hat trick on the power play to make it 6-3.  Brenden Gallinek and Ryan Harrity would assist on the play.  Ryan Harrity made it 6-4 shortly after on an assist from Robbie Poirier.  Harrity would add his second goal of the evening to bring Richmond within one on an assist from Ben Weisburger.  Freshman forward Robbie Poirier would tie the game at six on assists from Ben Weisburger and Rob The Blob Blosio.  After the Spiders tied the game, NC State would continue to create a roller-coaster of a game, answering back with three more goals of their own to take a 9-6 lead into the locker room.

In the third period, both teams came out playing fire-wagon hockey, peppering both goaltenders with shots on shots on shots.  Wes Harty made the score 9-7 with a foggy cannon from the blue-line on an assist from Rob Blosio.  NC State would make it 10-7 just a few minutes later to stop the comeback in its tracks.  Ryan Harrity added completed his hat trick to make it 10-8 on assists from Ben Weisburger and Will Plumb.  Weisburger would add a goal of his own to bring the Spiders within one on assists from John Danyluk and Brenden Gallinek.  However, the Spiders would not be able to fully complete the comeback, as NC State added an empty net goal with only a few minutes remaining to seal the deal, and clinch an 11-9 victory.

The weekend moves the Spiders to 6-8-0 (3-3-0).  Richmond will now enjoy some time off as the players prepare for Final Exams and head home for the holidays.  The Spiders will next be in action on the weekend of January 13th, as they will head down to Cary, NC for three games in a tournament hosted by NC State.  Stay tuned to URhockey.com to follow the Spiders quest through the 2011-2012 season.

As for the third and final award, it is an award that URhockey.com only has the honor of awarding once a semester:  The UR Hockey Social MVP award.  After much consideration, URhockey.com is unable to give the award to just one person, as both Matt Burns and Jack Merriman had performances that were too clutch to go unrecognized.  The juniors both displayed their upperclassmen leadership, showing the rest of team exactly what it takes to pull out a rock solid performance at the team social.  Congratulations Jack and Matt!  Honorable mentions also go out to Taylor Nyhoff for providing rides to many members of the team, and to Jared Ingersoll for helping those in certain times of need.

Spiders Struggle to Gain Footing in Classic

11/20/11

This past weekend, the University of Richmond Ice Hockey team travelled up to Vineland, New Jersey to take part in The Classic, an annual showcase tournament featuring the top teams from the BRHC, CHE, DVCHC, and the ECHC.  The Spiders found themselves in Pool B of the tournament, packed full of top-ranked teams from the Atlantic Region.

On Friday afternoon, the Spiders faced off against the third ranked (tie) team in the Atlantic region, Farmingdale State.  The Spiders fought hard battling a short bench, and fell 5-1 to Farmingdale.  Sophomore forward Michael Cerepak netted the lone goal for Richmond to extend his point streak to three games.  Senior Jamie Wilson had the assist.  Junior goaltender Jack Merriman was excellent in the pipes, making 50 saves on the afternoon.

On Saturday afternoon, Richmond attempted to battle back in the tournament against the third ranked (tie) team in the Atlantic region, Robert Morris University.  Receiving a few reinforcements into the lineup in the form of Matt Burns (the original URhockey.com POTW winner and owner of the best beard in all of club hockey) and Kyle Peterson (owner of the craziest legs in the BRHC and team webmaster), the Spiders got off to a solid start early in the game.  After giving up an early goal to the Colonials, Richmond answered with two quick goals of their own.  Ben Weisburger struck first for the Spiders on assists from Michael Vilardo and Ryan Jacobsen.  Just a few minutes later, red-shirt senior Rob Blosio made it 2-1 in favor of Richmond on an assist from senior Ryan Harrity.  The Spiders suffered a few mental lapses late in the first period, and Robert Morris capitalized with two late goals to take a 3-2 lead into the locker room.  In the second period, the Spiders played less than stellar, and the Colonials bagged three more goals in the period to make it 6-2 after two periods.  In the third period, Richmond came out slow one again, and another Robert Morris goal made it 7-2.  However, Richmond would buckle down and answer with a goal from Freshman forward Michael Vilardo on an assist from birthday-boy Connor Koorbusch.  Ben Weisburger made it 7-4 a few minutes later, with Koorbusch earning his second apple of the night.  Robert Morris would answer later in the third to make it 8-4, before Michael Vilardo added his second goal of the night on assists from Ryan Jacobsen and Ben Weisburger.  Robert Morris would add a late goal to eventually earn a 9-5 victory.

On Sunday morning, the Spiders hoped to earn redemption as they took on #6 Neumann.  Neumann would take an early 1-0 to put the Spiders in the hole.  However, less than a minute later, the lights went dim, the rink collected a bit of fog, and the crowd went silent as Sophomore defensemen Wes Harty unleashed a cannon from the blue-line to net his first ACHA goal.  Later in the period, Sophomore forward Ben Weisburger netted his 15th goal of the season and gave the Spiders a 2-1 lead on assists from Michael Vilardo and Brenden Gallinek.  Unfortunately for Richmond, mental breakdowns towards the end of the period allowed Neumann to score two late goals, and take a 3-2 lead into the locker room.  In the second period, Neumann was able to strike first once again to take a 4-2 lead.  Freshman forward Michael Vilardo brought the deficit back to one later in the period on a snazzy unassisted goal.  Neumann would add another tally though to stretch their lead back to two, carrying a 5-3 lead into the locker room.  In the third period, the Spiders played hard, but were unable to get the right bounces.  Three more Neumann goals stretched the score to 8-3 before Ben Weisburger was able to add his second goal of the game.  The Spiders would eventually fall by a final score of 8-4.

After the weekend, UR hockey falls to 5-7-0 (2-3-0) on the season.  Despite the disappointing performance, the Spiders would like to thank all of the parents who made the trip to the dense metropolis of Vineland, NJ to cheer on Richmond!  The Spiders will have an off weekend as the players head home for Thanksgiving break.  Richmond will have two more games this semester, as they will play Catholic University on December, 2nd in Washington, DC.  They will close out the semester at home on Saturday, December 3rd with a home game against Division 2 North Carolina State.  The puck drops at 8:30 PM at the Richmond Ice Zone.

In other news, URhockey.com is pleased to announce this week’s Lauritano Appraisal Services Player of the Week award winner.  After much consideration, URhockey.com is pleased to announce that this week’s award goes to Sophomore defenseman Wes Harty.  Harty played phenomenally throughout the weekend, installing fear into his opponents’ eyes with his physical play and intimidating Mohawk.  Harty also bagged his first ACHA goal on the weekend.  Congratulations Wes!

Other nominees for the Lauritano Appraisal Services POTW Award were:

  • Red-Shirt senior Rob Blosio:  Blosio played excellent throughout the weekend, showing what two-way hockey is all about with his presence in the defensive zone and faceoff circle.  Blosio also added a goal against Robert Morris.
  • Sophomore forward Ben Weisburger:  The shifty sophomore played solid throughout the weekend, racking up 4 goals and an assist.  Weisburger also made his presence felt in the defensive zone, making numerous efforts on the back-check.

Spiders Drop Close One to Loyola

11/13/11

This past Saturday, the University of Richmond ice hockey team travelled up to Baltimore, MD to take on defending BRHC-Colonial division champions Loyola.  The Spiders hoped to gain some footing in the BRHC-Colonial division standings, and end their 5 game losing streak to Loyola.  The game also would carry big implications regarding rankings, as both teams were ranked within one spot of each other going in (Richmond at #9, Loyola at #10).

The Spiders came out a bit slow in the first period, but managed to counter Loyola’s early attacks.  Sophomore Michael Cerepak struck first in the game on an assist from long-term line-mate Taylor Nyhoff to put the Spiders up 1-0.  Richmond would tighten up their play in the defensive zone, and take the 1-0 lead into the locker room.

In the second period, the Spiders came out very slow, and Loyola took advantage by notching two tallies in the first half of the period to put the Greyhounds up 2-1.  Later in the period, the Spiders would tie the game at two as freshman Big Bob Poirier converted on a breakaway.  Sophomore Ben Weisburger assisted on the play.  The goal allowed the Spiders to take a 2-2 tie into the locker room.

In the third period, Richmond fought hard, but was unable to crack the Loyola goaltender.  The game remained tied at two until the last minute of the period when Loyola was able to score the game winning goal with only 51 seconds left on the clock.  The Greyhounds would add an empty netter with none seconds left on the clock to escape with a 4-2 victory.

The loss drops the Spiders to 5-4-0 (2-3-0) on the season.  Richmond will next be in action this coming weekend, as they will participate in The Classic in Vineland, NJ.  The Spiders will be playing three games in three days against top competition in the Atlantic Region, and hope to make a big statement to the nation in the tournament.  The schedule for the weekend is as follows:

Spiders Torch Rams

11/10/11

This Wednesday night, the University of Richmond ice hockey team took the ice for a rare Wednesday night game against cross-town rival VCU.  In front of the largest home crowd of the season, the Spiders got the revenge they were looking for to avenge their earlier loss to the Rams.

Richmond came out like a ball of fire in the first period as Ben Weisburger scored less than two minutes into the game on the power-play an assist from Michael Vilardo.  The Spiders made it  2-0 midway through the period as freshman forward Michael Vilardo notched a shorthanded tally on an assist from Brenden Gallinek.  VCU would answer a few minutes later to bring the score to 2-1.  Freshman forward Robin Poirier got heroic with four minutes left in the period as he made it 3-1 on assists from John Danyluk and Weston Harty.  The Spiders would take the 3-1 lead into the locker room after the first twenty minutes.

In the second period, VCU came out ready to play, and quickly added a goal to make it 3-2.  A few minutes later, Senior Ryan Harrity made it 4-2 on a beautiful assist from John Danyluk.  With about six minutes left in the second period, VCU ran into some Blosio Problems as red-shirt senior Rob Blosio went top cheddar to make it 5-2 in favor of the Spiders.  Just two minutes later, freshman Michael Vilardo added his second goal of the evening on an assist from Brenden Gallinek to make it 6-2 Richmond.

In the second period, the Spiders looked far from stellar, giving up three quick goals to go down 4-1.  Richmond would settle down for the rest of the period but was unable to crack Georgetown’s goaltender, and would take a 4-1 hole into the locker room.

In the third period Richmond came out hard, but an unlucky bounce found the Spiders in a 5-1 hole.  The Spiders battled hard throughout the period, but were unable to get on the board again until there were less than two minutes left in the period.  Brenden Gallinek initiated the comeback to make it 5-2 on an assist from Red-Shirt senior Rob Blosio.  Ben Weisburger made it 5-3 about 20 seconds later on assists from Connor Koorbusch and Robbie Poirier.  Ben Weisburger was able to add another goal with 12 seconds left to make it 5-4 on assists from Ben Weisburger and Rob Blosio.  The Spiders put pressure on the Hoyas for the final 12 seconds, but simply ran out of time, and the comeback fell just short, as the Spiders lost by a score of 5-4.

Captains Edge Spiders

10/31/11

This past Friday, UR hockey continued their season with a league game against the Christopher Newport Captains, hoping to carry the momentum from their trip to Georgia into the game.  The game was a see-saw battle that eventually saw the Spiders take a 5-4 loss.

In the first period, the Spiders came out looking like they had weights in their skates.  Despite this, the Spiders were able to strike first, as Freshman forward Michael Vilardo netted a power-play goal eight minutes into the game on a beautiful pass from Freshman forward Robbie Poirier.  CNU was able to answer later in the period, and the Spiders would end the first period in a 1-1 tie.

In the second period, the Spiders came out lackadaisical, allowing the Captains to control the play for the first half of the period.  Fortunately, junior goaltender Jack Merriman was an absolute stud in the cage, keeping the score tied at one.  Senior sniper Jamie Wilson then put Richmond up 2-1 on an assist from Jared Ingersoll.  The Spiders would take the 2-1 lead into the locker room, hoping to close it out in the third.

The Spiders came out strong in the third period, but found themselves in the box early and often in the third.  This allowed the Captains to drain two power-play goals to gain a 3-2 lead.  Junior forward Ryan Jacobsen answered a few minutes later on an assist from Michael Vilardo to tie the game at three.  CNU was able to get the next tally with just over eleven minutes to go, regaining the lead.  Junior forward John Danyluk then went for a dangle to tie the game at four with just under ten minutes remaining.  The Spiders would control much of the rest of the game, but were unable to crack the Captain’s goaltender when it mattered most.  The street-smart Captains then capitalized, scoring with fifteen seconds left in regulation to skate away with a 5-4 victory.

The loss drops Richmond to 3-2-0 (0-2-0).  The Spiders will resume league play this Friday night, as they will welcome Salisbury University to Richmond at 11:10 PM at SkateNation Plus (Not the RIZ).  On Saturday night, the Spiders will trek up to Washington, DC to take on the Division 2 Georgetown Hoyas.  The weekend will be the last in the first ranking period for the Spiders, as they hope to make a big splash with the voters before the first rankings are released.

On Friday night, the University of Richmond Ice Hockey team opened up their 2011-2012 season against Radford University on alumni weekend.  With a lot of new faces on the roster, the Spiders hoped to get off to a fast start to begin their quest to a Regional Tournament berth and a BRHC championship.  The Spiders did just that on Friday night, knocking off Radford to start the year 1-0.

Richmond came out strong in the first period, as Junior forward Taylor Nyhoff converted on a rebound less than four minutes into the game to get the Spiders’ first tally of the season.  Kyle Peterson and Michael Cerepak assisted on the goal.  A hard fought first period saw Richmond hold on to a 1-0 lead after the first.

In the second period, Radford came out strong, and tied it up at one early in the period.  Senior Captain Mike Bosserman quickly responded to give the Spiders the lead on assists from Brenden Gallinek and Wes Harty.  Freshman forward Robbie Poirier then added a tally of his own to stretch the lead to two as he recorded his first ACHA goal on assists from Ben Weisburger and Aubry Dicks.  Weisburger went upper-bunk two minutes later on the power-play on an assist from Connor Koorbusch.  Radford brought the deficit back to two goals towards the end of the period, and the teams entered the locker room with the score 4-2 in favor of Richmond.

In the third period, Richmond came out strong and made it 5-2 as Junior forward Matt Burns added a power-play goal on a nifty deflection.  Brenden Gallinek and Connor Koorbusch assisted on the play.  Radford would add a late goal, but the Spiders proved to be too much, escaping with a 5-3 victory.

The Spiders now have an off weekend as the players will head home for Fall Break.  They will resume play on October 15th, as they open up BRHC Colonial play against cross-town rival VCU.

URHockey.com is also pleased to announce the first Lauritano Appraisal Services Player of the Week award of the 2011-2012 season.  After much consideration, URHockey.com is pleased to present the award to Senior forward Mike Bosserman.  Bosserman notched a big goal against Radford, and also provided great leadership in his first game as Captain.

Other nominees for the Lauritano Appraisal Services Player of the Week award were:

      • Sophomore forward Ben Weisburger (who had the game winning goal in the second period and an assist on the evening).
      • Sophomore defensemen Brenden Gallinek (who had 2 assists on the evening, and never gave up despite squandering countless scoring chances on the evening).

Spiders Finish as BRHC-Colonial Runner’s Up

      2/27/11

This past weekend, the University of Richmond Ice Hockey team concluded their season with the BRHC-Colonial Division playoffs in Lynchburg, Virginia.  The Spiders entered the playoffs as the #4 seed, with hopes of winning 3 games in 3 days to take home the championship.  The Spiders’ first game was lined up for Friday afternoon, with Richmond facing the fifth seeded Christopher Newport Captains in the first round.

Richmond and Christopher Newport found themselves in a see-saw battle for most of the game, with neither team seeming able to take control for long.  Freshman forward Ben Weisburger went upper-bunk all afternoon, registering a hat-trick.  Tucker Blanton, Ryan Jacobsen, and Mike Collins also netted goals for the Spiders, who found themselves in a 6-6 tie with less than a minute left in regulation.  Richmond continually put pressure on the Captains in the final minute; with Senior captain Dan Hebert finally netting the game winner with 8.8 seconds remaining in regulation, allowing the Spiders to advance to the semi-finals with a 7-6 victory.

On Saturday morning, the Spiders found themselves in a semi-final match against second seeded VCU.  Despite missing numerous key players and playing with only 14 skaters, Richmond was able to grind out a victory.  VCU struck first in the first period, taking a 1-0 lead all the way into the third period.  Tucker Blanton tied the game at one early in the third frame.  Senior forward Rob Blosio put the Spiders up 2-1 a few minutes later.  A late goal by VCU tied it up at two, and the game would head into overtime.  The Spiders and Rams played a scoreless five minutes, and the game headed into a shootout.  Dan Hebert, and Matt Burns converted goals in the shootout, but the Rams were able to match the Spiders through the first five rounds with two goals of their own.  Junior forward Mike Bosserman converted for Richmond in the sixth round, and Charlie Boles stood strong in net as the Spiders were able to advance to the finals with a 3-2 shootout victory.

On Sunday morning, the Spiders entered the championship game of the BRHC-Colonial division against top seeded (and defending tournament champions) Loyola.  Loyola struck first in the first period, gaining a 1-0 lead.  Sophomore forward Tucker Blanton would answer, knotting the score at one midway through the second.  However, Loyola regained the momentum, netting 3 unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead.  Midway through the third period however, Richmond began to find their footing again.  Ben Weisburger led the charge as he made it 4-2.  Dan Hebert then converted on a power-play to make it 4-3.  Senior forward Mike Collins kept the momentum going, tying the game at four on another power-play goal.  However, Loyola was able to regain control of the game, scoring two unanswered goals in the final minutes, winning the championship game by a final score of 6-4.

After the weekend, the Spiders will end their season at 15-13-1 (6-5-1).  Despite the disappointing loss to Loyola, the Spiders were able to enjoy many accomplishments throughout the season.  Some of the accomplishments include:

      • Gaining a birth to the South Regional Tournament with a #8 Ranking in the final ranking period
      • 4 wins over teams ranked in the top 15 of the South Region
      • Rumble in Richmond Tournament champions for the first time in program history
      • Battle of Virginia Tournament Champions

In conclusion to the season, Urhockey.com is pleased to announce the final Lauritano Appraisal Services Player of the Week award of the season.  After much consideration, Urhockey.com is pleased to present Senior Defenseman Dan Hebert with the award.  Hebert had a monster weekend for the Spiders, netting the game winning goal against Christopher Newport, notching a shootout goal against VCU, and converting a power-play goal vs. Loyola.  The Spiders’ captain was also rock-solid in the defensive zone throughout the weekend.

Other nominees for the Lauritano Appraisal Services Player of the Week award were:

      • Freshman forward Ben Weisburger (who drained 4 goals despite only playing in two of the three games in the weekend)

Spiders Clipped by Razorbacks, Steer Past Bulls

      2/22/11

This past weekend, the University of Richmond Ice Hockey team headed to Columbia, South Carolina for the ACHA D3 South Regional Tournament with hopes of going to the National Tournament.  To do so, the Spiders would need to defeat #5 University of Arkansas, a task that the Spiders fell just short on.

In the first period, both teams played a hard fought defensive game, leading to both teams being deadlocked at 0 after the first.  In the second period, the Hogs drew first blood to take a 1-0 lead.  However, Richmond found an answer as Senior Mike Collins fired in a changeup on an assist from Tucker Blanton.  Arkansas was able to answer with 2 more goals in the second, and Richmond entered the locker room down 3-1.

The third period proved to be evenly matched, but the Spiders just couldn’t capitalize.  The Razorbacks were able to add an insurance goal to skate away with the 4-1 victory.

On Saturday morning, the #8 Spiders found themselves in a consolation game with the #6 South Florida Bulls.  Richmond and South Florida played a fairly even first period, as both teams traded a pair of goals, and entered the locker room tied 2-2.  Ben Weisburger and Mike Collins had the goals for Richmond, with Tucker Blanton and Dan Hebert recording assists.

In the second period, Richmond came out flirting with mediocrity, giving up 3 quick USF goals, finding themselves down 5-2.  However, the Spiders began to rally on an unassisted power-play goal by Sophomore forward Tucker Blanton.  Blanton then made it 5-4 on assists by Mike Collins and Will Harrison.  The Spiders would enter the locker room trailing 5-4.

The Spiders came out flying in the third period, scoring two goals in the first two minutes of the period.  Mike Collins found the back of the net with his second changeup of the weekend on assists from Brenden Gallinek and Dan Hebert.  Tucker Blanton then buried another goal on an assist from Ben Weisburger.  Blanton then hammered home another goal on assists from Mike Collins and Dan Hebert.  Junior Ryan Harrity got in on the fun, with Mike Bosserman and Will Harrison getting the helpers.  Senior Capitan Dan Hebert then notched a goal on assists from Tucker Blanton and Brenden Gallinek.  Tucker Blanton capped off the scoring for Richmond on his 5th goal of the game, unassisted.  South Florida was able to add a few late goals, and the Spiders won by a final score of 10-8.

The weekend moves Richmond to 13-12-1 (6-5-1).  The Spiders will now prepare to end their season this coming weekend in the BRHC-Colonial playoffs at the LaHaye Ice Center in Lynchburg, Virginia.  The Spiders will take on Christopher Newport on Friday at 1:00 PM, and if they are victorious, they will play top-seeded Loyola at 2:00 PM on Saturday.  The BRHC-Colonial championship game is scheduled for 10:00 AM on Sunday.

URhockey.com is also pleased to announce this week’s recipient of the Lauritano Appraisal Services player of the week award.  After much consideration, this week’s award goes to Junior forward Ryan Harrity.  Despite squandering at least a baker’s dozen scoring chances on Saturday vs. South Florida, Harrity never gave up, and eventually netted a goal in the third period.  Congratulations Ryan!!

Other nominees for the Lauritano Appraisal Services Player of the Week Award were:

      • Sophomore forward Tucker Blanton (who was dynamite on the weekend notching 5 goals and 3 assists)
      • Senior forward Mike Collins (who notched 2 goals and 2 assists on the weekend)
      • Senior defenseman Dan Hebert (for finding his way on the score sheet with 1 goal and 3 assists on the weekend)

In other news, the BRHC released their awards list (except for the MVP) and the All-Colonial teams.  The Spiders were honored in having two players named to first team All-Colonial, as freshman forward Ben Weisburger and Senior defenseman Dan Hebert took home the honors after having phenomenal seasons.  Weisburger also was the runner up for the Colonial Division’s Rookie of the Year Award.  Head Coach Kevin Silver also was the runner up for the Colonial Division’s Coach of the Year Award.  Congratulations to all!

      Spiders Caught Sleeping vs. Captains

      2/13/11

This past week was a big week for the University of Richmond Ice Hockey team.  On Wednesday, the Spiders were informed that they earned the #8 ranking in the Southeast Region, securing a bid to the regional tournament to play #5 Arkansas in the first round.  However, before regionals, the Spiders had 1 more game left on their schedule, against BRHC-Colonial rival Christopher Newport.  The game not only carried big implications regarding seeding for the league playoffs, but it was also the seniors’ last home game at the beloved Richmond Ice Zone.

Coming out of the gate, the Spiders played extremely sluggish, and were lucky to find themselves in a 1-1 tie at the end of the first period.  In the second period, Richmond carried the play, but a few rough bounces found both teams tied 4-4 at the end of the second.  The third period proved to be one that the Spiders would not be proud of, as Christopher Newport drained 3 unanswered goals to win the game by a final score of 7-4.  Senior forward Mike Collins potted 2 goals for Richmond.  Senior forward Ray Gill and Freshman Ben Weisburger also notched goals for the Spiders.

The tough loss moves Richmond to 12-11-1 (6-5-1) on the season.  The Spiders look to rebound in the Regional Tournament this Friday as they will take on the #5 Arkansas Razorbacks, on Friday, February 18th, in Columbia, South Carolina.  The puck drops at 2:30 PM.

Despite the loss, Urhockey.com is still proud to announce the Lauritano Appraisal Services Player of the Week Award.  After much consideration, the award will go to Senior forward Mike Collins.  Despite the overall sluggish play for the Spiders, Collins played an inspired game, leading Richmond with 2 goals on the night.

Other nominees for the Lauritano Appraisal Services Player of the Week Award were:

      • Senior forward Ray Gill (who netted a big first period goal for Richmond, and was a force in front of the net the whole night).
      • Freshman forward Ben Weisburger (who notched a goal and was integral to the Spiders power-play unit throughout the night).
      • Senior goaltender Addison Humbert (who made several point-blank saves to keep the Spiders within striking distance throughout the game).

      Spiders Win Rumble in Richmond

      2/2/11

This past weekend, the University of Richmond ice hockey team hosted their annual Rumble In Richmond tournament at the Richmond Ice Zone.  This year’s field pitted 4 teams ranked in the top 15 in the South Region, with the Spiders hoping to solidify some big wins (and win the tournament for the first time in history).  After a hard fought weekend of hockey, the Spiders achieved just that.

On Friday night, the #12 Spiders faced off against #10 UNC-Wilmington.  Tucker Blanton had a natural hat trick in the first period to put the Spiders up 3-0.  Blanton would add another goal in the second for his 4th of the night, but two UNC-Wilmington goals in the second period would make it 4-2 after two periods.  However, John Danyluk, Jamie Wilson, and Mike Collins would add 3rd period tallies, allowing the Spiders to cruise to a 7-2 victory.  Freshman forward Ben Weisburger was electric throughout the night, dishing out 5 assists.  Sophomore Kyle Peterson also notched 2 assists, with Dan Hebert and Mike Bosserman each assisting on 1 goal.  Sophomore goaltender Jack Merriman made 30 saves.

On Saturday night, Richmond set to do battle with #7 Georgia Tech.  Tucker Blanton once again was dynamite delivering 4 goals on the evening (all on assists from Ben Weisburger).  Weisburger would also add a goal of his own.  Senior defenseman Will Harrison also hammered home a goal, as the Spiders cruised to a 6-1 victory.

On Sunday morning, the Spiders faced off against #5 Loyola, looking to go 3-0 on the weekend and capture the Rumble In Richmond.  Richmond was optimistic about the game as they welcomed 2 key players back into the lineup:  Forwards Ray Gill (one of the team’s leading scorers) and Matt Burns (former URhockey.com POTW award winner).  However, Loyola jumped out to an early lead on Richmond, and the Spiders were never fully able to fully recover, losing the game by a score of 5-3.  Mike Collins, Mike Bosserman, and Tucker Blanton provided the goals for the Spiders.  Tucker Blanton, Ray Gill, and Wes Harty picked up one assist each.

With the Spiders dropping the 3rd game of the weekend, they found themselves in a 3-way tie for 1st place in the tournament, as UNC-Wilmington, Loyola, and Richmond all went 2-1 on the weekend.  The tournament was decided by who had allowed the fewest goals (3rd tiebreaker), a tiebreaker which allowed Richmond to take home the championship for the first time in program history.  The weekend improves the Spiders to 12-10-1 (6-4-1) on the season, who will be off this weekend before closing out the regular season at home against Christopher Newport on February 11th.  The puck drops at 11:10 PM at the Richmond Ice Zone.

Without further ado, URhockey.com is pleased to announce this week’s Lauritano Appraisal Services Player of the Week Award.  While normally the award is an honor that can only be bestowed on one individual, this week saw two phenomenal individual performances that could not go unrecognized.  Freshman forward Ben Weisburger is one of the co-recipients of the award.  The freshman forward produced 1 goal and 9 assists on the weekend, and was named the tournament’s MVP.  The other co-recipient of the award is Weisburger’s partner in crime, sophomore forward Tucker Blanton.  Blanton matched Weisburger’s point total with 9 goals and 1 assist on the weekend, and was named the tournament’s top forward.

Other nominees for the Lauritano Appraisal Services Player of the Week Award were:

        • Junior Mike Bosserman (who notched 1 goal and 1 assist while playing both forward and defense)
        • Junior Jamie Wilson (who notched his first goal of the season against UNC-Wilmington, and was a physical force throughout the weekend).

        Spiders Demolish Penalty-Happy Captains

        1/22/11

This past Friday night, the University of Richmond Ice Hockey team travelled to BRHC-Colonial foe Christopher Newport, hoping to help their regional hopes and BRHC-Colonial playoff seeding.  In a penalty ridden game in which Christopher Newport had 101 penalty minutes, including 5 misconducts (compared to Richmond’s 25 penalty minutes), the Spiders managed to keep their cool and help their cause with a 10-3 romp of Christopher Newport.  Mike Collins paced the Spiders 2 goals and 5 assists.  Sophomore forward Tucker Blanton delivered 3 goals and 3 assists.  Freshman forward Ben Weisburger sliced up the Captains’ defense for 1 goal and 4 assists.  Brendan Gallinek also notched 1 goal and 2 assists on the evening.  Ryan Harrity came through with 2 goals.  Rob Blosio also punched in a goal for victors.  John Danyluk also had 2 assists for the good guys.  Kevin Kuhar, Jeff Fritsch, and Dan Hebert had 1 assist each for Richmond.  The win improves the Spiders to 10-9-1 (6-3-1) on the season and moves them into second place in the BRHC-Colonial division.

The Spiders will next jump into action next weekend, as they will host the “Rumble in Richmond” tournament, which will pit four teams that all have regional aspirations.  The Spiders will face off against UNC-Wilmington, Georgia Tech, and Loyola on the weekend.  Check back here on Monday for a preview and schedule of the tournament.

Spiders Go 1-1 To Start Second Semester

        1/17/11

This past weekend, the University of Richmond Ice Hockey team resumed their quest through the 2010-2011 campaign with games against Old Dominion and Liberty University.

On Friday night, the Spiders came out flying.  Sophomore forward Tucker Blanton opened up the scoring on an assist from freshman defenseman Wes Harty.  Senior Mike Collins quickly made it 2-0, with Junior defenseman Jamie Wilson getting the helper.  Freshman defenseman Brenden Gallinek then went coast to coast to make it 3-0 on an unassisted effort.  Tucker Blanton made it 4-0 at the end of the first period on assists from captain Dan Hebert and Ben Weisburger.

The Spiders found themselves in trouble with penalties in the second period, but it didn’t seem to matter as Senior forward Mike Collins scored a five on three shorthanded goal to make it 5-0 in favor of the Spiders.  Old Dominion managed to get 2 second period goals, and made the score 5-2 after two periods.

In the third period, Richmond found themselves in a bit of a scare, as the Monarchs added a tally to make it 5-3.  However, senior forward Ray Gill made his presence felt as he scored 2 goals during one shift to give Richmond a 7-3 edge.  Senior forward Jeff Fritsch assisted on both tallies, and Brendan Gallinek also recorded an assist.  The goals put the game out of reach, allowing the Spiders to cruise to a 7-3 victory, with freshman goaltender Charlie Boles making 34 saves in the pipes for the win.

On Saturday night, Richmond travelled to Lynchburg to take on Liberty, the #4 team in Division 2 (Southeast Region).  The Spiders struggled to find their edge all night, and fell by a score of 11-1.  Junior Ryan Harrity had Richmond’s lone goal.

The Spiders will have an off weekend this coming weekend, and will close out the month with the annual “Rumble in Richmond” tournament, where the Spiders will face UNC-Wilmington, Georgia Tech, and Loyola.  Check back here next week for a schedule with game times and a preview of the tournament.

        • Senior forward Jeff Fritsch (for notching 2 assists vs. Old Dominion and providing intangible senior leadership)

Spiders Clip Catholic; Suffocate VCU to End the Semester

        12/6/10

This past weekend, the University of Richmond Ice Hockey team looked to come up strong after a disappointing weekend in The Classic.  To do this, the Spiders added a few reinforcements to the roster.  Senior forward Mike Collins has joined the team after a 2 year hiatus.  Collins played for Richmond his freshman year, and amassed 29 goals and 15 assists in 22 games.  Ryan Harrity also rejoined the team, after missing most of the semester recovering from injuries.  Both players looked to contribute immediately.  Richmond had 2 BRHC-Colonial opponents in their sights, and came through in a big way.

On Friday night, Richmond travelled up to Washington, DC to take on Catholic University.  After playing a scoreless first period, sophomore forward Tucker Blanton gave the Spiders a 1-0 lead on an assist from Ben Weisburger.  Sophomore forward Matt Burns made it 2-0 Richmond early in the third on an assist from John Danyluk.  After surrendering 2 goals midway through the 3rd period, sophomore Matt Burns broke the tie with his second goal of the game on assists from Danyluk and Blanton.  The goal would turn out to be the game winner, and Richmond skated away with a 3-2 victory.  Senior goaltender Addison Humbert stood tall in between the pipes, making 18 saves for the victory.

On Saturday night, Richmond returned home to the Richmond Ice Zone, playing in their final game of the semester vs. #14 VCU.  Senior forward Mike Collins gave the Spiders a 1-0 lead in the first period on an assist from Tucker Blanton.  Freshman forward Ben Weisburger made it 2-0 in the second period, on assists from Dan Hebert and Mike Collins.  In the third period, sophomore forward John Danyluk made it 3-0 on assists from Ryan Harrity and Mike Collins.  Junior forward Ryan Harrity capped off the scoring late in the third period on assists from Wes Harty and Ben Weisburger.  Freshman goaltender Charlie Boles made 13 saves to earn his second shutout of the season.

The victories improve Richmond to 8-8-1 (4-3-1).  The Spiders will resume their season on January 14th with a big home matchup vs. BRHC-Colonial rival Old Dominion.  At the start of the Spring semester, the Spiders will also welcome back 2 players from abroad:  Juniors Mike Bosserman and Jamie Wilson.  Bosserman was one of the leading scorers for the Spiders last season, and will add a serious punch to the forwards.  Wilson will bring his physical presence to the team, adding depth to the blue line.  Both players look to contribute in a big way as the Spiders gear up for the stretch run next semester.

In other news, URhockey.com would like to announce the first recipient of the “URhockey.com player of the week award.”  There were many players under consideration for this award, but URhockey.com is pleased to announce that sophomore forward Matt Burns will be the first recipient of the coveted award.  Burns was a grinder turned sniper on Friday night, potting 2 goals (including the game winner) vs. Catholic.  Burns was also flawless in the defensive zone on the weekend, and lights out on the penalty kill.

Other nominees for the URhockey.com player of the week award were:

          • Senior Forward Mike Collins (1 goal, 2 assists in his first weekend with the Spiders since his freshman year)
          • Junior forward Ryan Harrity (1 goal, 1 assist in his first weekend back from injury)
          • Senior Defenseman Kevin Kuhar (for his blue-collar work ethic and physical presence on the blue-line)
          • Freshman goaltender Charlie Boles (for recording his second shutout of the season vs. #14 VCU)

          Spiders Struggle in The Classic

          11/22/10

This past weekend, the University of Richmond Ice Hockey team looked to make a splash on the national scene by participating in The Classic, a showcase that featured 16 teams split evenly between the ECHC, the DVCHC, CHE, and the BRHC.  The Spiders knew they were in for a weekend full of competitive games, but in the end came up short on the weekend.

On Friday night the Spiders opened up with SUNY Albany of the ECHC, the #6 team in the Atlantic Region.  Richmond struggled to find their legs all night, and fell by a final score of 6-1.  Senior forward Ray Gill notched the Spiders only tally.

On Saturday morning, the Spiders hoped for better results against Robert Morris (CHE), the #3 team in the Atlantic Region.  The Spiders once again came out extremely flat, and surrendered 3 goals within the first 10 minutes of the game.  Richmond responded in the second and third periods, finding themselves down 6-4 in the final minutes of the game, but Robert Morris added an empty netter, and the Spiders fell by a final score of 7-4.

On Sunday evening, the Spiders hoped to salvage a win on the weekend when they took on #14 West Chester of the DVCHC.  Richmond fought hard throughout the game, but fell by a final score of 4-2.  Sophomore forward Tucker Blanton netted both goals for Richmond.

Following the disappointing weekend, the Spiders drop to 6-8-1 (2-3-1).  Richmond will have an off weekend this coming weekend, and then jump back into action with 2 BRHC-Colonial games to close out the semester.  The Spiders will take on Catholic University on Friday, December 3rd on the road, and will return home to close out the semester on Saturday, December 4th to take on #14 VCU.  The puck drops at 8:50 PM at the Richmond Ice Zone.

In other news, the University of Richmond Ice Hockey team would like to send out a big thank-you to the Kuhar family for inviting the team to their home this past weekend for a home-cooked meal and a relaxing afternoon.

Spiders go 2-1 in Clemson Clash

                                                                     11/14/10

This past weekend, Richmond headed down to Greenville, South Carolina to participate in the “Clemson Clash,” hoping to post some statement wins on their resume.  The Spiders accomplished just that, going 2-1 on the weekend.

On Thursday night, Richmond faced off against #1 Florida Gulf Coast, and suffered a tough 4-1 defeat.  On Friday night, Richmond rebounded against Appalachian State, earning hard fought 3-2 victory.  On Saturday night, the Spiders got the statement win they had been looking for all season, trouncing #8 Clemson by a score of 8-1.

After the weekend, the Spiders improve to 6-5-1 (2-3-1).  Richmond will next compete in “The Classic,” hosted by the Empire Collegiate Hockey Conference.  On Friday, Richmond will face #6 Albany of the Empire Collegiate Hockey Conference, on Saturday they will face #3 Robert Morris of College Hockey East, and on Sunday they will face #14 West Chester of the Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference.  This set of games will have big implications on the Spiders regional hopes.

Spiders down Old Dominion; Drop Tough One to Georgetown

          11/6/10

The University of Richmond Ice Hockey team entered this past weekend on a 3 game losing streak.  The streak found the Spiders 6th in the BRHC Colonial standings, something that Richmond knew they needed to change quickly.  The Spiders got that opportunity on Friday night, and seized it, downing BRHC-Colonial Division rival Old Dominion by a score of 3-1.
Richmond came out strong in the first period.  Sophomore forward Tucker Blanton put the Spiders up 1-0.  The defense kept Old Dominion off the board, and Richmond entered the locker-room with a 1-0 lead.

The Spiders came out strong in the second period as well, when Sophomore forward John Danyluk scored a shorthanded goal to put Richmond up 2-0.  The defense kept Old Dominion off the board once again, and Richmond entered the locker-room with a 2-0 lead.

Richmond came out flying the third period as well, as Sophomore forward Taylor Nyhoff scored shorthanded to put Richmond up 3-0.  Richmond continued to play solid defense, and combined with sophomore Jack Merriman’s phenomenal goaltending, the Spiders kept Old Dominion off the board until the last 34 seconds of the game.

On Saturday, the Spiders looked to go 2-0 on the weekend, facing off against Division 2 Georgetown University on the road.  Richmond came out flat in the first period, and Georgetown capitalized.  The Spiders quickly found themselves in a 2-0 hole, and entered the locker-room down 2-0 after the first.

Richmond responded and came out strong in the second period, and Freshman defenseman Brenden Gallinek scored to make it 2-1 less than a minute into the period.  However, Georgetown responded with a tally of their own, making the score 3-1.  Senior forward Ray Gill then responded by finishing a breakaway, making it 3-2 with less than a minute remaining in the second period.

Coming into the third period, Richmond came out strong, putting lots of pressure on Georgetown.  However, the Spiders were unable to find the back of the net, and suffered a 3-2 loss.

After the weekend, Richmond moves to 4-4-1 (2-3-1).  The Spiders have a big weekend ahead of them, as they will travel to Greenville, South Carolina to participate in the “Clemson Clash.”  Richmond will take on Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday night, Appalachian State on Friday night, and Clemson on Saturday night.

          Spiders Suffer Another Tough Loss

          10/30/10

On Saturday night, the Richmond Spiders hockey team travelled up to Baltimore, Maryland to take on BRHC-Colonial defending champions Loyola, hoping to end their 2 game losing streak, and get themselves back in the playoff and regional races.  However, the Spiders came up short, losing by a final score of 6-3.

Richmond came out flying in the first period, and sophomore forward Tucker Blanton put the Spiders up 1-0 on assists from Ben Weisburger and Brenden Gallinek.  However, Richmond struggled defensively the rest of the period, giving up 4 goals, and entered the locker room trailing 4-1.

The Spiders once again came out slightly sluggish to start the second period, and another Loyola goal put the score at 5-1.  However, Richmond buckled down defensively, and Senior forward Rob Blosio notched a goal with 25 seconds left in the second period on an assist from Tucker Blanton, and Richmond went into the locker room down 5-2.

Richmond came out strong in the third period, getting numerous scoring chances before Freshman forward Ben Weisburger buried a power-play goal on assists from Brenden Gallinek and Dan Hebert, making it 5-3.  Richmond continued to put on pressure, but Loyola added a late goal, winning the game by the final score of 6-3.

The loss puts the Spiders at 3-3-1 (1-3-1).  Richmond will next take the ice this Friday night, when they travel to Virginia Beach to take on BRHC-Colonial rival Old Dominion University.  The Spiders will also travel to Laurel, Maryland on Saturday afternoon to take on Georgetown University.

          Spiders' Comeback Falls Short

          10/23/10

On Friday night, Richmond looked to rebound after a tough 4-1 defeat at the hands of Salisbury in the previous week.  The Spiders fought hard, but fell just short, dropping a 3-2 decision to BRHC-Colonial foe Salisbury.

After playing a scoreless first period, Salisbury came out hard in the second period, building a 3-0 lead.  The Spiders then began to fight back, and after a second period power-play goal went in to the locker room trailing 3-1.

At the start of the third period, Richmond came out flying, and brought the score to 3-2 with a power-play goal by senior defenseman Dan Hebert.  The Spiders continued to fight hard throughout the third period, but their comeback just fell short as Salisbury’s defense held up during the game’s final minutes.  The loss takes Richmond to 3-2-1 (1-2-1) on the season.  The Spiders will next take the ice on Saturday, October 30, as they will take on the BRHC-Colonial defending champions Loyola on the road in Baltimore.

Spiders Beat Catholic, Drop One To Salisbury

          10/17/10

This weekend, the Spiders looked to take big strides in the BRHC-Colonial standings as they had key matchups with Catholic and Salisbury.

On Friday night, Richmond took on BRHC-Colonial newcomer Catholic University.  The Spiders came out flying, skating away with a 7-3 victory.  The line of Ray Gill, Tucker Blanton, and Ben Weisburger combined for 6 of the 7 goals.  Junior transfer student Greg Kusterbeck also buried his first collegiate goal.  Senior net-minder Addison Humbert stood tall in the pipes, earning his first victory of the season.

On Saturday night, Richmond travelled up to Harrington, Delaware to take on BRHC-Colonial rival Salisbury.  Richmond fought hard, but fell by a score of 4-1 to the Gulls.  Freshman forward Ben Weisburger had the lone tally for the Spiders.  The loss puts Richmond at 3-1-1 (1-1-1) on the season.

Richmond will return to action on Friday, October 22nd as they host Salisbury in a key BRHC-Colonial matchup.  The puck drops at 11:10 PM at the Richmond Ice Zone.

Spiders Go 2-0 on Weekend, Capture the Commonwealth Cup

          10/9/10

After a tough seasoning opening loss to cross-town rival VCU, the Spiders looked to rebound in a big way in the annual Commonwealth Cup tournament held in Richmond.  Richmond came through, going 2-0 on the weekend and being crowned tournament champions.

On Friday night, the Spiders kicked off the tournament against William & Mary.  Richmond came out strong early, as first period goals by Sophomores Ryan Jacobsen and John Danyluk put Richmond up 2-0.  The Spiders carried the momentum throughout the game, and cruised to a 6-2 victory.

On Sunday morning, Richmond faced off against VCU.  Determined to avenge their loss to the Rams from the previous weekend, the Spiders came out hard and seized control of the game, skating away with a 4-0 victory, capturing the Commonwealth Cup.  Freshman goaltender Charlie Boles recorded the shutout (the first of head coach Kevin Silver’s tenure).

After an off weekend Richmond will have two key matchups on October 15th and 16th.  On Friday the 15th, Richmond will take on Catholic University at home, and on Saturday the 16th they battle Salisbury on the road.  Both matchups are key BRHC-Colonial Division matchups, and will have large implications on the Spiders playoff and regional aspirations.

          Spiders Get Edged In Overtime

          9/26/10

Before Friday night’s regular season opener for the University of Richmond Ice Hockey team, the Spiders knew they would be in a dog-fight against cross-town rival and one of the newest members of the BRHC-Colonial Division, VCU.  This idea proved to be correct.  The Rams stuck early, capitalizing on nearly every Spider mistake, taking a 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game.  However, Richmond buckled down after that, playing a relatively even game for the next period and a half, and headed into the locker room after the second period trailing 7-4.

Knowing that it would take a great effort to come back, the Spiders fought hard in the third period, including tying the game at 7-7 with no time remaining in regulation.  After numerous chances in overtime however, VCU was given a chance and seized the opportunity, racing down the ice to score the game winning goal, giving VCU an 8-7 victory over the Spiders.

Despite the loss, the 1-1 Spiders remain hopeful on their outlook for the rest of the season, and will next be in action this weekend in the Battle of Virginia Tournament.  On Friday, Richmond will take on James Madison at 7:00 PM, and on Saturday they will face off against William & Mary at 9:40 PM.  A potential championship matchup with either James Madison, William & Mary, or VCU is also slated for 11:10 AM on Sunday.  All games will be played at the Richmond Ice Zone.  Come support your Spiders as they look to rebound in the tournament, and gain momentum heading forward through the 2010-2011 campaign!

Spiders Release Schedule, Prepare for 2010-2011 Season

          9/16/10

The University of Richmond Ice Hockey team has now released their schedule for the 2010-2011 season.  The Spiders will compete in the BRHC Colonial Division again this season, which will feature two matchups each with Loyola, Old Dominion, Christopher Newport, Salisbury, as well as newcomers Catholic University and VCU.   The Spiders will open the season at home on September 24th vs. VCU on alumni weekend.  Other highlights of the schedule include trips to Vineland, New Jersey to participate in “The Classic,” hosted by the Empire Collegiate Hockey Conference, as well as a trip to South Carolina to participate in the “Clemson Clash.”  The Spiders are also pleased to announce the participating teams for the annual “Rumble in Richmond,” held in January.  The Spiders will duke it out with Georgia Tech, UNC-Wilmington, and Loyola in the annual tournament.  To see the Spiders’ complete schedule, please check the “Schedule” page of the site.

The Spiders do have some holes to fill after losing seniors Matt Improta, Byron Glasgow, Will Ireland, Jake Rogers, and Viren Ratnaswami to graduation.  However, the recruiting class for the 2010-2011 season looks to pack quite a punch.

The strong freshmen class will add some goaltending depth in the form of freshmen Charlie Boles (Chatham, NJ).  The Spiders will also return all three goaltenders from last season, as Sophomore Jack Merriman (2nd team all BRHC-Colonial, Bloomfield, NJ), and Seniors Kevin Walsh (Park City, UT) and Addison Humbert (York, PA) will all be back between the pipes for Richmond.

The Spiders also look to be strong on the blue line for the 2010-2011 season.  Seniors Dan Hebert (Hingham, MA) and Will Harrison (Wyckoff, NJ) will anchor the defense.  Junior Spencer Bates (Cumberland Foreside, ME) will also add experience on the blue line.  Senior Chris Woodford (Morristown, NJ) also will return to the team after a one semester hiatus, and will bring his physical game to the table.  Freshmen Brendan Gallinek (Summit, NJ) and Wes Harty (Langhorn, PA) will also provide immediate contributions on the blue line.  The Spiders will add even more depth on defense for the spring semester as Junior Jamie Wilson (Locust Valley, NY) will return from studying abroad in time for the playoff run.

The Spiders also look to have a tremendous amount of depth at forward for the 2010-2011 season.  The Spiders will return 10 of the 14 forwards from the 2009-2010 campaign for the upcoming semester.  The Spiders will also welcome back Junior Mike Bosserman (Carmel, IN) for the Spring semester when he returns from studying abroad.  In addition to the returning forwards, the Spiders will also welcome Senior forward Kevin Kuhar (Mays Landing, NJ) to the team.  Kuhar’s physical presence and blue-collar work ethic looks to add a punch to the forwards.  The Spiders will also add freshmen forwards Ben Weisburger (Bedford, NY), and Michael Cerepak (Saddle River, NJ) to the team.  Both Weisburger and Cerepak look to immediately factor into the offense.
Check back to the site often for updates on the Spiders’ journey through the 2010-2011 season.

          Spiders Drop Heartbreaker in Charlotte

          // 4/21/10

The Spiders went into the BRHC Colonial playoffs in Charlotte, NC with expectations of bringing home a championship.  However, the Spiders met their match Friday night when they battled #12 Salisbury.  Despite sweeping Salisbury in the regular season, the Gulls and the Spiders were in a war of a game, and the teams entered the third period tied 3-3.  However, the Spiders came out flat in the beginning of the third, and Salisbury quickly opened up the game to a score of 9-4.  The Spiders led a spirited comeback, but it fell just short resulting into a 9-7 defeat.  The loss ends the Spiders’ season at 13-12 (7-6).  Despite the disappointing first round loss, the Spiders had many accomplishments during the 2009-2010 season that they look to build upon for next season.
          The Season’s highlights include:

          • Being ranked in the top 15 of ACHA Division 3 South in every ranking period of the season, including finishing the season at #11

          Spiders Douse Flames in Lynchburg

          \\ 2/18/10

Heading into the University of Richmond Ice Hockey team’s Friday night matchup with Liberty University, the Spiders felt they could not catch a break as of late.  The Spiders had dropped 4 in a row to BRHC foes, and missed out on the ACHA South Regional Tournament by one spot.  However, the hockey gods finally smiled upon the Spiders on Friday night, allowing the Spiders to edge past Liberty 6-3 at the LaHaye Ice Center in Lynchburg.  Despite falling behind 1-0 early in the first, and facing an extremely faithful crowd in support of the Flames, the Spiders answered by jumping out to a 4-1 lead at the end of the first period, working their way to a 6-3 triumph.  Junior goaltender Kevin Walsh stood strong in net for the Spiders, stopping all but 3 shots sent his way.  The victory improves the #11 Spiders to 13-11 on the season.  The Spiders have an off weekend this weekend, and will wrap up their season at the BRHC playoffs February 26-28 at the Extreme Ice Center in Charlotte, NC.

          \\ 10/17/09

The Richmond Spiders travelled to the Eastern Shore of Virginia to do battle with CNU Friday night and boy what a thriller it was. Despite the rocking crowd supporting CNU, the Spiders battled back from a 3-1 deficit in the third to take a 5-4 lead, but with 1:30 left in the game CNU tied the score and sent the game into overtime. The Spiders opened the overtime period short-handed but managed to kill the penalty and shortly there after Matt Improta fed Ray Gill who potted his fourth goal of the evening and put the Spiders in the win column. The Spiders once again relied on solid goaltending from Junior Addison Humbert who made 24 saves in the victory including a huge back-door rob in OT. The comeback was the teams third come from behind win of the season as they move to 2 and 0 in BRHC play and 3 and 2 overall. Richmond Opens Season With a Huge Road Win!

          // 10/1/09

The University of Richmond Spiders got the 2009-2010 season off to a rousing start in Harrington, Delaware this past weekend as they defeated conference rivals Salisbury University 4-3. The Spiders look to turn the page on last season and this win certainly got them off on the right foot.
Newly minted alternate captain Viren Ratnaswami scored the Spiders first goal of the season. Shortly there after freshman Taylor Nyhoff buried his first collegiate goal. Captain Matty Improta scored late in the second to give the Spiders the 3-2 lead after two, and then Ryan Harrity lit the lamp in the third on a nifty break-away to give the Spiders the 4-2 lead.
Junior goalie Addison Humbert was rock-solid between the pipe making 20 saves on 23 shots and earning the huge win!

UR RE-JOINS THE BLUE RIDGE HOCKEY CONFERENCE FOR 08-09 SEASON

06.10.2008 //
In the 07-08 season, UR left the BRHC looking for fewer conference games and a stronger overall schedule. That was accomplished when Coach Occhino helped form the Colonial Collegiate Hockey Conference (CCHC). Meanwhile, a few other strong teams left the BRHC and a couple of start-up teams were added.  UR had a successful year in the CCHC by winning the regular season title and earning many individual awards. In the BRHC, the CNU and ODU programs were dominating and making waves in the ACHA DIII South. The BRHC saw the success of the CCHC and decided to adopt a similar concept. At the end of the 07-08 season, the BRHC formed the "Colonial" Division which will be a "select" division reserved for teams that meet certain high standards. Making this happen was a lot of work by many people. BRHC Commissioner Ray Campbell had this to say “I would like to personally thank all the teams and coaches involved, our Board of Directors, the MACHOA referee association and CCHC's representative Tom Occhino for bringing this all together.”

UR is excited to be joining the BRHC again. The BRHC is a very well organized league with many experienced volunteers. UR won 4 BRHC Tournament titles in their 6 seasons in the BRHC, won numerous individual awards, and Coach Occhino was a member of the Board of Directors for many years.

SECOND SEMESTER PREVIEW
The Spiders are looking forward to an action-packed 2nd semester!

01.16.2008 //
The roster will have some changes as some freshmen will no longer be on the team and study abroad students will return. The team looks forward to the return to the ice of Junior forwards Chris Nelson and Mike Fredrickson.

The 2nd semester schedule starts with a game vs. cross-town rival VCU. The Spiders want to complete the 2 game sweep this season. Next will be the 5th Annual Rumble in Richmond. ACHA South #1 seed UCF will attend for the 3rd year in a row. UCF beat UR in 2006, UR beat UCF in 2007, and the 2008 game should be a great battle. Gettysburg, who beat CNU this year and CCHC member Loyola are the other 2 teams in the tournament. These should be 6 great games.

Having qualified for the ACHA DIII National Tournament twice in their history (2004, 2005), the team is unhappy with their recent absence from the tournament. Every team holds its destiny in their hands with the new ACHA “Regional Tournament” Format. The Spiders have been ranked in the top 10 in the Southern Region all season and expect to stay there after the final February ranking (includes games from the 1st weekend in February). Teams #1 and #2 get an automatic bid to the National Tournament (Rochester, Minn) and teams #3 through #10 will play in the Regional Tournament to determine South seed #3 and #4 for the Nationals. All 4 spots are up for grabs!

Regionals, CCHC Playoffs, Nationals??? – should be exciting Spiders hockey!

Please contact team General Manager Tom Occhino with any questions.

FIRST SEMESTER SUMMARY

01.15.2008 //
The biggest question coming into the 07-08 season was - can the Spiders replace the production and leadership from the recent Senior graduates? Coach Occhino was able to add a total of 13 freshmen (F,D,G) to the roster which would allow great flexibility. The freshmen were ready to contribute.
