Spiders Conclude Regular Season 2-0; Clinch BRHC-Colonial Regular Season Title

This past weekend, the University of Richmond Ice Hockey team concluded their regular season with two big BRHC-Colonial games that would determine their playoff seeding, and keep their hopes of going to Regionals alive. On Friday night, Richmond faced off against #8 Christopher Newport. The Spiders came out flying early as freshman Side-Show Bob Poirier put Richmond up 1-0 on an assist from senior captain Mike Bosserman. With a few minutes remaining in the first period, sophomore sniper Ben Weisburger put Richmond up 2-0 on assists from Robbie Poirier and Brenden Gallinek. Christopher Newport would add a goal to trim the lead in half before the end of the period, and the Spiders would enter the locker room up 2-1.
In the second period, Christopher Newport came out flying again, and was able to tie the game at two. However, midway through the period, junior forward Tucker Blanton scored on the power-play to put Richmond up 3-2 on assists from Ben Weisburger and Connor Koorbusch. Less than two minutes later, junior forward Matt Burns made it 4-2 on an assist from Mike Bosserman. The Spiders would take the two goal lead into the locker room.
In the third period, Richmond continued to pour it on the undisciplined CNU Captains, and Tucker Blanton made it 5-2 on an assist from Matt Burns. Sophomore forward Ben Weisburger would cap off the scoring to make it 6-2 on an assist from Young Robin Poirier. Sophomore goaltender Charlie Boles was excellent on the evening, stopping 37 of 39 shots.
On Saturday afternoon, Richmond travelled up to Harrington, Delaware to take on Salisbury University with the BRHC-Colonial Division title on the line. Despite playing with only 12 skaters in the game (Thanks Lisa), Richmond came out flying as junior forward John Danyluk put Richmond up 1-0 in the first period on assists from Michael Cerepak and Kyle Peterson. The Spiders would play solid defensive hockey the rest of the period, and take the 1-0 lead into the locker room.
In the second period, Richmond seemed to have their legs turn to jelly due to the short bench, and Salisbury was able to pot three unanswered goals in the period. Before the end of the period though, the Spiders would regroup themselves and bring the deficit to one as Bob Cheesehead Poirier scored his 20th goal of the season on the power-play. John Danyluk gathered an assist on the play. The Spiders would head to the locker room down 3-2.
In the third period, Richmond came out buzzing again, putting continuous pressure on Salisbury. With just a few minutes left in the period, junior forward Matt Burns scored the game tying goal on assists from John Danyluk and Jared Ingersoll. The game would remain tied through the end of regulation, and the game would head to overtime. In the extra frame, neither team was able to find the back of the net, and the game would head to a shootout. In the shootout, Tucker Blanton and Matt Burns both potted goals for the Spiders. Junior goaltender Jack Merriman turned away both Salisbury shooters, giving the Spiders the BRHC-Colonial title. Merriman would finish with 32 saves on the afternoon.
After the weekend, the Spiders improve to 12-11-1 (8-4-0). Their fate is now in the hands of the Rankings Committee, as they will hope to maintain or improve their current ranking to give them a spot in Regionals in Columbia, SC in two weeks. After much consideration, we are pleased to announce that the goaltending tandem of Charlie Boles and Jack Merriman will share the player of the week. Both goaltenders were excellent on the weekend, with Boles stopping 37 of 39 shots on Friday night, and Merriman stopping 32 of 35 shots on Saturday afternoon. Congratulations Jack and Charlie!

- Freshman forward Robbie Poirier: The pride of Wisconsin came up big as usual this past weekend, contributing two goals and two assists to the winning efforts.
- Junior forward John Danyluk: The junior forward stepped up in a big way this weekend with a short bench, grabbing one goal and 3 assists on the weekend.
- Junior forward Tucker Blanton: The junior forward has returned from abroad with a bang this semester, and this weekend was no different. Blanton had two great goals on Friday night against CNU, and scored in the shootout on Saturday against Salisbury.
In other news, URhockey.com is also pleased to announce this week’s Rowdy Scratch of the week. After much consideration, URhockey.com is pleased to announce that this week’s Rowdy Scratch award goes to Senior forward Ryan Harrity. The senior forward was sidelined this weekend with flu-like symptoms, but that did not stop Ryan from looking sharp on the bench, and providing excellent chirps and moral support throughout the weekend. Congratulations Ryan!
Spiders Go 2-1 In Rumble; Prep For Final Week of Regular Season

This past weekend, the University of Richmond Ice Hockey team faced off in the annual Rumble in Richmond Tournament, with hopes of defending their title from last season. This year’s field would be an all BRHC-Colonial Division affair, with Richmond facing off against Salisbury University on Friday, Loyola on Saturday, and Catholic University on Sunday.
On Friday night, the Spiders came out like a ball of fire against the Gulls, and jumped out to an early lead as junior forward Tucker Blanton buried a shorthanded goal on assists from Ben Weisburger and Lisa Harrison. The Spiders would protect the lead for the remainder of the period, and head into the locker room up 1-0.
In the second period, both teams came out firing on all cylinders, and Salisbury was able to tie it up midway through the second period. Less than a minute later, freshman forward Robbie Poirier created a situation as he put the Spiders up 2-1 on assists from Wes Harty and Ryan Harrity. The Spiders would add another goal just 15 seconds later, as Wisco Bob Poirier buried his second goal of the game on an assist from Ryan Harrity. The Gulls would not go away though, as Salisbury trimmed the deficit to one just two minutes later. Salisbury would add two more goals in the next few minutes to take their first lead of the game. With about five minutes remaining in the period, Ryan Harrity tied the game back up on an assist from Mike Bosserman and Wes Harty.
In the third period, Richmond raced out to another fast start, as Ben Weisburger tipped in Brenden Gallinek’s shot from the point to give the Spiders a 5-4 lead. Tucker Blanton also collected a helper on the play. Midway through the period, Salisbury was able to tie the game at five. The Spiders and Gulls would both clamp down their defensive units for the rest of regulation, and the game would head to overtime. In the extra frame, the Spiders generated some chances, but were unable find the back of the net. That would prove to be the death of them, as Salisbury was able to bury the game winner with 1:33 left in the extra frame to give the Gulls the victory.
On Saturday, Richmond looked to end a six game losing streak to Loyola (MD). Richmond got off to a bit of a slow start, as Loyola was able to bury two goals in the first half of the period to race out to an early 2-0 lead. With about six minutes left in the period, the Spiders got their legs under them as junior forward John Danyluk buried a goal on an assist from Wes Harty. A few minutes later, Loyola was able to regain their two goal lead on the power-play. With just over two minutes remaining in the period, senior forward Ryan Harrity brought Richmond back within one on an assist from Connor Koorbusch.
In the second period, Richmond continued to step up their game, as senior forward Ryan Harrity put in his second goal of the game on an assist from Wes Harty. The two teams would play rock-solid defense for the rest of the period, and go into the locker room tied at three.
In the third period, Richmond took their first lead of the game as John Danyluk sniped his second goal of the game on an assist from Matt Burns. The lead would be short lived however, as Loyola would add another power-play goal one minute later to tie the game back up at four. That would prove to be the only scoring of the period, and the teams would head to overtime. In the extra frame, neither team was able to generate much offense, leading the game to a shootout. In the shootout, junior shoot-out specialist Matt Burns rung the bell to give the Spiders a victory, as junior goaltender Jack Merriman was able to mystify all three Loyola shooters. Merriman would finish the game with an astounding 52 saves.
On Sunday, Richmond looked to take the momentum they gained on Saturday into a morning tilt against Catholic University. The Spiders wasted no time jumping out to an early advantage, as sophomore forward Ben Weisburger opened up the scoring a minute and a half in the game on assists from Matt Burns and Tucker Blanton. The lead would be short lived however though, as Catholic was able to tie it up just seven seconds later. The Spiders and Cardinals would continue to play fire-wagon hockey, as Aubry Dicks buried his first career ACHA goal on an assist from Ryan Jacobsen. A few minutes later, sophomore forward Ben Weisburger added to the Spiders lead on an unassisted effort. However, right before the end of the period, Catholic was able to bring the Cardinals within one.
In the second period, Catholic came out hard, as they were able to score two quick goals to take their first lead of the game. Midway through the period, sophomore forward Ben Weisburger was able to stop the madness and tie the game back up on an unassisted effort to complete the hat trick. Twenty seconds later, Ryan Harrity put on a shooting clinic for his first goal of the game on an assist from Rob The Situation Poirier. The Spiders would clamp down their defensive efforts for the remainder of the period, and take a one goal lead into the locker room.
In the third period, the Spiders and Cardinals continued solid defensive play, until Catholic was able to tie the game at five with nine minutes remaining. With five minutes left in the game, freshman defenseman Connor Koorbusch caught Catholic with their pants down, putting in what would prove to be the game winner on a wraparound goal. The goal would be Koorbusch’s first of his ACHA career. Mike Bosserman and Wes Harty would collect assists on the play. Tucker Blanton would add an empty netter on an assist from Ben Weisburger with only seven seconds left to give the Spiders a 7-5 victory.
After this weekend, Richmond moves to 10-11-1 (6-4-0). The Spiders have their final weekend of the regular season this weekend as they will travel to Virginia Beach to take on Christopher Newport University on Friday night, and to Harrington, Delaware on Saturday afternoon to take on Salisbury University.

- Sophomore forward Ben Weisburger: The shifty forward racked up four goals and an assist on the weekend. Weisburger also managed to eclipse both the 20 goal and 50 point milestones on the season.
- Freshman defenseman Connor Koorbusch: The hard hitting freshman had the game winning goal on Sunday against Catholic, and also had an assist against Loyola. Perhaps more importantly though, Koorbusch continued his domination in the Penalty Minutes category, as he racked up his 45th minute in the box of the season.

After much consideration, URhockey.com is pleased to announce that Senior forward Jamie Wilson is the recipient of the award. Despite being sidelined with an injury, Wilson was in full force this weekend, providing so much support for UR Hockey that he couldn’t even find time to change his clothes. Congratulations Jamie!
URhockey.com would also like to extend congratulations to Sophomore defenseman Wes Harty, who was named the most valuable defenseman in the tournament. Senior forward Ryan Harrity also was named the most valuable forward of the tournament. URhockey.com would also like to thank all parents and fans that came out to the games this weekend!
Spiders Split A Pair With Seahawks

This past weekend, the University of Richmond Ice Hockey team looked to get themselves back in the picture for Regionals with a pair of home games against BRHC-Colonial newcomer UNC-Wilmington. On Friday night, The Spiders and Seahawks got the scoring started early, as Richmond’s Tucker Blanton struck less than a minute into the game on assists from Ryan Jacobsen and Ben Weisburger. Richmond was able to maintain the lead throughout the period, and extended it to 2-0 with a few minutes left in the period when Senior forward Ryan Harrity pumped in a goal on assists from Mike Bosserman and Robbie Poirier. The Spiders would take the 2-0 lead into the locker room.
Early in the second period, UNC-Wilmington got on the board to cut the Spiders’ lead to one. Midway through the period, Freshman Roberto Poirier struck on the power-play to make it 3-1 in favor of Richmond. Sophomore forward Ben Weisburger would get the only assist on the play. Tucker Blanton would make it 4-1 just a few minutes later, with Weisburger once again garnering the lone helper. Towards the end of the period, the Seahawks garnered some momentum, adding two goals to trim the Spiders’ lead to one.
As the teams took the ice for the third period, UNC-Wilmington grabbed an early goal to tie the score at four. Junior forward Tucker Blanton would give the Spiders the lead just three minutes later on a dreamy unassisted effort to complete the hat trick. Two minutes later, UNC-Wilmington would tie the score at five, before taking their first lead of the game with seven minutes remaining. The Spiders continued to put pressure on the Seahawks as the clock wore down, and Freshman forward Bob The Builder Poirier unleashed a booming slap-shot with just three minutes remaining to tie the game at six.
The game would head into overtime, and the Spiders quickly found themselves in a bit of trouble, as they would be forced to kill off a four minute penalty. Richmond’s penalty killing unit would hold strong for the overtime, coupled with Charlie Boles making 11 saves in the extra frame, as the Spiders would hang on for a shootout. As the shootout began, neither team was able to find the back of the net, with Charlie Boles stopping all three Seahawks shooters. Matt Burns buried the game winner for the Spiders, allowing them to escape with a wild 7-6 victory.
On Saturday night, Richmond looked to carry the momentum from their shootout victory on Friday night into Saturday’s tilt. Matt Burns picked up right where he left off, giving the Spiders the early lead on an assist from Finn McCarthy. The Spiders would control the play for much of the first period, but were not able to add to the lead, and would head into the locker room with a 1-0 lead.
In the second period, the wheels seemed to fall off of the Spiders, as UNC-Wilmington was able to pop three goals in, taking a 3-1 lead into the locker room. Early in the third period, UNC-Wilmington would add two more early goals to stretch their lead to 5-1. Freshman forward Robert Poirier would temporarily stop the bleeding on assists from Tucker Blanton and Ben Weisburger. The assist would be Weisburger’s team leading 30th assist of the season. The Spiders were unable to garner any momentum from the goal, and a few more late UNC-Wilmington goals would continue to worsen the score, as the Spiders fell by a final score of 7-2.
After the weekend, Richmond moves to 8-11-0 (4-4-0). The Spiders will have a big week of practice this week, as they will prepare for the biggest weekend of the season next weekend as they will host the annual Rumble in Richmond Tournament. The Spiders will face Salisbury University on Friday at 5:30 PM, Loyola on Saturday at 4:10 PM, and Catholic University on Sunday at 11:30 AM. All games will be played at the Richmond Ice Zone, and admission is free. Come out and support your Spiders as they attempt to get their season back on the right track.

Spiders Struggle in Raleigh

This past weekend, the University of Richmond Ice Hockey team opened up their spring semester of play by participating in the Stephen Russell Memorial Tournament, hosted by North Carolina State University. The Spiders knew that this weekend would be tougher than usual, as six regulars were out of the lineup (including the team’s leading marksman Ben Weisburger) due to Greek life obligations. However, Richmond would receive a boost in the lineup as Senior captain Mike Bosserman would return from an undisclosed upper body injury that sidelined him for much of the Fall semester. Last season’s leading scorer Tucker Blanton would also return from a semester in Europe, and defenseman Finn McCarthy would return to the team after a year and a half hiatus.
On Friday night, the Spiders would face off against #13 UNC-Charlotte. Richmond rushed out to an early 1-0 lead as Tucker Blanton converted on the power-play for his first tally of the season on assists from Ryan Harrity and Wes Harty. Charlotte would answer back a few minutes later to tie the game at one. Richmond would take the lead with just 50 seconds remaining in the period, as Ryan Harrity pumped in a goal on assists from Matt Burns and Michael Cerapak. Junior forward John Danyluk would stretch the lead to two with just 17 seconds remaining in the period on assists from Wes Harty and Tucker Blanton. Richmond would take the 3-1 lead into the locker room.
At the start of the second period, Richmond would begin to pour it on as John Danyluk made it 4-1 on assists from Jamie Wilson and Matt Burns. Senior captain Mike Bosserman would add a tally of his own just a few minutes later to make it 5-1. Wes Harty would get the lone helper on the play. Just two minutes later, Charlotte would finally stop the bleeding, scoring a goal of their own to make it 5-2. However, it was not long again until junior forward Matt Burns opened the wound back up, making it 6-2 Richmond on assists from Tucker Blanton and Mike Bosserman. Senior Jamie Wilson would make it 7-2 in favor of the Spiders on assists from John Danyluk and Ryan Harrity. A few minutes later, the Spiders would begin to slip out of their funk, as Charlotte would add two goals before the end of the period to make it 7-4 Richmond. In the third, Charlotte continued to trim the deficit, but the Spiders were able to hang on for a 7-6 victory.
On Saturday, the Spiders would have their hands full again, as they faced off against D2 UNC-Chapel Hill. The Spiders would come out a bit slow in the first period, as UNC was able to jump out to a 1-0 lead, which would hold strong through the end of the period.
Early on in the second period, Richmond was able to tie the score at one as Tucker Blanton displayed excellent hand-eye coordination on a nifty deflection. Wes Harty and Mike Bosserman would collect assists on the play. UNC would answer back a few minutes later to regain the lead. Richmond’s Matt Burns would tie the score at two on assist from Wes Harty just a few minutes later. UNC would continue to create the see-saw effect in the game, retaking the lead midway through the second period. The Spiders would answer again just five minutes later, as Matt Burns would bury his second goal of the game on an assist from Aubry Dicks. The score would remain tied at three through the remainder of the period as the teams would head to the locker room to regroup their thoughts.
Early on in the third, UNC would make it 4-3 to regain the lead. Just three minutes later, Tucker Blanton would tie the game at four on assists from Mike Bosserman and Matt Burns. The score would remain tied until the final minute, when UNC would go for the jugular with only 12 seconds remaining, allowing them to pick up a 5-4 victory.
On Sunday morning, Richmond faced off in the third place game of the tournament, facing UNC-Charlotte for the second time of the weekend at the RBC Center in Raleigh. While Friday’s game between the two teams was nothing short of fire-wagon hockey, Sunday’s match was much more of a defensive grudge match. The two teams would play to a scoreless first period. In the second period, Ryan Harrity would break the ice and give the Spiders the lead early in the second period on assists from Brenden Gallinek and Jamie Wilson. Charlotte would answer back later in the period, and the teams would enter the locker room tied at one. In the third period, the teams would play at a back and forth pace for much of the period, with Charlotte breaking the tie with only a few minutes remaining. Charlotte would add an empty netter, and the Spiders would drop the game by the final score of 3-1. Jack Merriman was strong in net for the Spiders, stopping 28 Charlotte shots.
The weekend drops the Spiders to 7-10-0 (3-3-0). Richmond will regain the remainder of their roster this week in practice, and will face #15 UNC-Wilmington twice at home this weekend on Friday and Saturday. The man formerly known as Marty Weston stepped up to a new level this weekend. In addition to being rock solid in the defensive zone, Harty also added five assists to his contributions this weekend. - Senior Captain Mike Bosserman. The Senior triumphantly returned from injury and contributed 1 goal and 3 assists over the weekend. Bosserman also contributed numerous intangibles throughout the weekend, bringing excellent senior leadership to the table.
- Junior forward Tucker Blanton. The junior made a big splash in his first weekend back with Richmond after his semester abroad, collecting 3 goals and 2 assists. Blanton was also an integral part of the Spiders special teams units, playing many shifts on both the power-play and penalty kill.
- Junior forward Matt Burns. Burns, a usual grinder unleashed the sniper inside this weekend, adding 3 goals and 3 assists to the effort.
In other news, URhockey.com is also pleased to announce this week’s Rowdy Scratch of the Week. While there were no scratches with the team this weekend due to a short bench, an anonymous source has assisted the webmaster in selecting this week’s Rowdy Scratch of the Week: Freshman defenseman Connor Koorbusch. Word on the street is that Koorbusch got an extra dose of rowdiness throughout the entire week as it was rush week at UR, earning his first ever Rowdy Scratch of the Week award. Congratulations Connor!!
