OUR PLAYERS WIN ON AND OFF THE ICE
With 69 majors, minors
and concentrations, UR is the premier private institution
in the State of Virginia. UR is a private, primarily undergraduate,
independent, highly selective, residential college. The campus
has 350 acres of stately pines, rolling hills and a 10-acre
lake located only six miles from downtown Richmond. The campus
has been cited as "Most Beautiful in the Country"
by the Princeton Review. Richmond is well-known as "The Capital
of the Confederacy," and it has numerous historical locations,
including Hollywood Cemetery and the Whitehouse of the Confederacy.
There are also art galleries, diverse museums, the James River,
unbelievable food, and minor league sports teams - making
Richmond a creative and exciting atmosphere. In addition,
the central location of the city puts students within two
hours of Washington D.C., Virginia Beach, and the Shenandoah
Valley. The city and the University have much to offer.
THE ADVANTAGES OF UR HOCKEY
During the school year, the University of Richmond Men's Hockey
Program practices one to two times a week at the Richmond
Ice Zone. All home games are also played at the Richmond Ice
Zone. All team members also have access to the University
of Richmond's Recreation Center, in order to participate in
off-ice conditioning. All games are played during the weekend
to avoid any educational conflict.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1) What are the application deadlines for the University of Richmond?
For Richmond's important application dates, please visit: http://www.richmond.edu/prospective/dates
2) When are Tryouts?
The University of Richmond Men's Hockey Team holds tryouts
each year early in September. There is a preliminary team
meeting the first week of school - usually in August to meet
new recruits and to inform everyone on the plans for the year.
It is to everyone's best interests that we recommend contacting
our coach prior to the tryouts so he can be well aware of
your interests in playing for our program. If you transfer
to the University of Richmond mid-year or you were not aware
of our team, we hold less-formal tryouts at the beginning
of the Spring Semester in January. Each year's tryout schedules
will be posted prominently on our website. For more information
fill out the questionnaire below.
3) What equipment do I need?
The University of Richmond Hockey team supplies players with
game jerseys, pant shells, game socks, and practice jerseys - all which
must be returned at the end of the year. Players on our team
are required to have a white helmet prior to
the first game of the season. (Non-matching equipment can
cause the team to be assessed a minor penalty). Also, mouth
guards and ear flaps are required for play in the ACHA.
4) How much does it cost?
Since the University provides our team with limited funding,
each person who participates on our team must pay player dues
each semester. The majority of our budget is ice time for
practices and games, as well as travel expenses, which is primarily what player dues go
towards. Dues for the 2011-2012 season stand at $500 per semester
5) What is the competition level like?
The majority of our players have come from U.S. High School and Prep School
hockey backgrounds, with a few coming from Junior hockey, house leagues, various travel leagues. We encourage players of
any talent level to try out.
6) Who is elligible to play?
The ACHA mandates that to participate in Division 3, all players must maintain a minimum 2.0 Culmulative GPA, as well as be enrolled full time in their respective institution. Unlike the NCAA, transfer students do not need to sit out a semester before playing. ACHA Division 3 also mandates that a player may play a maximum of 5 years on a combination of ACHA teams. However, if a player plays hockey in the NCAA or NJCAA for any time, they are immediately restricted to 4 years of eligibility, minus the number of years they played in the NCAA or NJCAA. Any player who has played Canadian Major Junior Hockey, or any level of Professional Hockey also automatically forefits ACHA elligibility. All full time Undergraduate and Graduate students are elligible to play as well.
